Reading goals
A goal shouldn't only tell you where to finish.
Twenty-four books this year is a direction. What actually moves it is one reading session, today. RUNU keeps the target you chose next to the reading you really recorded — and never guesses at the rest.
One yearly goal · 52 weeks
9 of 24 books, from 61 recorded sessions. Week 14 — the rest of the year is still open.
An illustrative example, not a real reader's data.
A year, at a distance
From here, the goal is a number and a lot of empty ring.
Every tick is one day of the period you chose. Nothing about that view tells you what to do this evening. So RUNU goes the other way — into one segment.

Inside one tick
One day. One session. This is the whole unit.
A Reading Session is the smallest thing a goal is ever made of — a duration, an ending page, the pages you advanced. Record it and the goal moves. Don't, and it honestly stays where it was.

Back out again
The arc was made of ordinary evenings.
Sixty-one sessions, some of them eighteen minutes long. None of them felt like progress toward twenty-four books. Together they are exactly that.

The distance that matters
“I need to read 24 books” is a long way from anywhere.
“I can read tonight” is somewhere you already are.
RUNU doesn't rewrite your goal into a daily quota, and it won't tell you that you're behind. It keeps both ends visible: the intention you set, and the last session you actually recorded.

An open-ended goal is just as valid as one with a deadline — a target is a direction, not a contract.
What a goal can count
Not everyone measures reading in books.
A goal in RUNU counts one thing over a period you choose — a year, a month, or open-ended with no end date at all. Four of them read very differently.
Books finished
9 / 24
Counted from the books you marked finished inside the goal's own dates.
Minutes read
12h 40 / 20h
Summed from recorded sessions only. Never estimated from pages, never from a book's dates.
Pages read
1,840 / 3,000
The pages you actually advanced in sessions — not the page counts of the books on your shelf.
Sessions logged
18 / 20
A goal about showing up. Twenty sittings this month, of any length at all.
RUNU also supports goals for weeks you were active, authors and genres you discovered, books rated and reviews written. Or you can begin from a Guided Plan — Build a Reading Rhythm, for instance, asks only that you read across eight separate weeks, at whatever pace feels comfortable.

Under the percentage
63% is the summary. This is the reading.
A percentage is a useful glance and a poor memory. Underneath every one of them in RUNU there are dated sessions with durations and pages — the same records your statistics are built from, in the order they happened.

A goal you can live with
A quiet week is a week. Not a verdict.
You can pause a goal, set it aside, adjust it, or come back to it later. A period ending without the target met is a fact about time passing — RUNU says “no longer active”, never “failed”, and keeps everything you recorded.
In progress
Counting. No pace, no pressure.
Paused
Your choice, whenever life needs the room.
Set aside
It stays part of your reading history.
No longer active
The period ended. Ready to revisit, any time.
Completed
Noticed by RUNU the moment the count reaches your target.
RUNU tracks a reading streak too, and won't nag you about it. Your goals are private by default — they're yours to keep to yourself, and nothing here is shared with anyone yet.
A goal is downstream of the reading you record, and upstream of nothing at all.
Every figure on this page is an illustrative example, not a real reader's data. RUNU has no estimates and no guesses: if you didn't record it, it isn't counted.
Questions
- What makes a good reading goal?
- One you'd still choose on a busy week. A target you can reach through ordinary sittings tends to hold better than an ambitious number that needs a perfect year — and in RUNU a target can be adjusted at any time.
- Can I set a reading goal based on time instead of books?
- Yes. A goal can count minutes read, pages read or sessions logged as well as books finished — plus weeks active, authors and genres discovered, books rated and reviews written. Time, pages and sessions all come from recorded Reading Sessions.
- How does RUNU track progress toward a reading goal?
- It counts your own records inside the goal's period, in your own time zone: books you marked finished, and the minutes, pages and sessions you recorded. When the count reaches your target, RUNU notices and marks the goal completed.
- What happens if I miss a few days?
- Nothing. There is no missed-day state, no warning colour and no message about falling behind. Your goal waits, your records stay, and the next session counts exactly as much as it would have.
The goal starts the next time you open the book.
