Goodreads import · currently in pre-launch

Don't start over.

You spent years building a reading history somewhere else. It can come with you — the books, your shelves, your ratings, your reviews, and the dates you finished them.

RUNU brings your history over from the export file Goodreads gives you. It does not connect to, sync with, or ask for the password to your Goodreads account. RUNU is not affiliated with Goodreads.

goodreads_library_
export.csv

Nine years of reading. 118 KB.

It doesn't look like much. Almost everything you'd want to keep is in there.

What you already have

Somewhere in that account is every book you finished, and roughly when.

You built that one book at a time, over years, without ever thinking of it as data.

It's the summer you read nothing, and the winter you read eleven. The book you rated two stars and still think about. The record isn't complete — no record is — but it's yours, and it's the only copy of that particular decade there will ever be.

Wanting something different from here shouldn't cost you that.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Piranesi

Susanna Clarke

Finished · 26 Nov 2021 · ★★★★☆

No reading sessions — that November was never recorded anywhere.

The history was in there all along.

Your library, back on a shelf.

Same books. Same ratings. Same dates. Sitting in RUNU, where the next nine years get recorded properly.

Field by field

Exactly what comes across.

Not “everything transfers”. This is the list, taken from what RUNU's importer actually reads out of a Goodreads export and writes into your library.

Comes across

Everything the export actually holds.

Title, Author
The book, matched against RUNU's catalogue.
ISBN, ISBN13
Used to pick the edition you actually read, where RUNU has it.
Exclusive Shelf
Your status. read → Finished, currently-reading → Reading, to-read → Want to read.
Bookshelves
Your own shelves. You decide where each one lands before anything is imported.
My Rating
Your rating, in whole stars, exactly as you gave it. No half stars invented.
My Review
Your review text, kept as yours. A later import never overwrites one you've edited in RUNU.
Date Read
The date you finished — at whatever precision Goodreads kept: a day, a month, or just a year. RUNU stores which, rather than pretending to a day it doesn't know.

Doesn't come across

Not withheld. Never recorded.

These are the things RUNU records while you read. No export can carry them, because nothing wrote them down at the time — so RUNU leaves them empty rather than filling them with a guess.

  • Reading sessions — every sitting, and how long it lasted
  • Recorded time, pages per sitting and reading pace
  • Session Mood and Reading Rhythm
  • Margins — the thoughts you'd have left beside a page
  • The day you started a book — a Goodreads export has no start date at all

Goodreads' Date Added is kept with the import record for reference, and is never shown as the day you started reading. An imported book does not gain sessions it never had.

How your history comes over

Three minutes, and it's yours again.

Goodreads gives you your library as a file. RUNU reads that file. That's the whole handover — no password, no account connection, nothing posted anywhere on your behalf.

The supported way, today

Your Goodreads export file

.csv · up to 8 MB · up to 5,000 books

  1. 01 Ask Goodreads for your library On the Goodreads website: My Books → Import and export → Export Library. Goodreads prepares the file and offers it as a download.
  2. 02 Keep the file it gives you It arrives as goodreads_library_export.csv. Don't open and re-save it — hand it to RUNU as it came.
  3. 03 Hand it to RUNU RUNU asks for it when you first sign in, and it's always waiting under Profile → Import your library if you'd rather do it later.

RUNU never asks for your Goodreads password and has no access to your Goodreads account. Importing into RUNU changes nothing in Goodreads — you don't have to delete anything, and you can keep both.

Before anything is added

Nothing lands until you say so.

RUNU reads the file, matches every book, and then stops to show you what it found. You approve it. Then it imports in the background — you can close the screen and come back.

Your shelves stay yours

Every shelf you invented gets pointed somewhere, by you.

RUNU finds every custom shelf in your export and asks what each one means: a reading status, a shelf in RUNU, or nothing at all. It won't guess, and the import can't start until they're all answered.

If a book is already there

One book, one entry. Your edits win.

A book you already have doesn't become a second copy — the import converges on the entry you've got, and anything you set yourself is protected. Import the same file twice and your library looks the same afterwards. A review you wrote in RUNU is never replaced by an imported one.

Nothing disappears quietly. Every book RUNU couldn't place is listed afterwards with the reason and the line it came from — and if the import itself stumbled on one, you can send that single book through again.

The line your history crosses

Your past comes with you. From here, RUNU remembers more.

Everything before today · imported

Books, shelves, statuses, ratings, reviews, and the dates you finished them.

Flat on purpose. It's a faithful picture of what was written down at the time — and RUNU adds nothing to flatter it.

Today

From here · recorded as you read

Every sitting: how long, how many pages, how it felt, what you thought on page 132.

The imported years stay exactly as they were. The record only gets deeper from the first time you press start — which is where the reading timer, your statistics and the Reading Journey begin.

Straight answers

Questions people actually ask.

Can I import my Goodreads library into RUNU?

Yes. Export your library from Goodreads and give RUNU the file it produces. RUNU matches every book, shows you what it found, and imports it once you approve. RUNU does not connect to your Goodreads account, and is not affiliated with Goodreads.

What Goodreads data does RUNU import?

Title and author, ISBN where it's there, your Goodreads status (read, currently reading, to read), your own shelves, your star rating, your review text, and the date you finished a book — kept at the precision Goodreads recorded, whether that's a day, a month or just a year.

How do I export my library from Goodreads?

On the Goodreads website, go to My Books, open Import and export, and choose Export Library. Goodreads prepares a goodreads_library_export.csv file for you to download. Give RUNU that file as it came — RUNU accepts files up to 8 MB and 5,000 books.

Will my old reading sessions and reading time appear after importing?

No — and RUNU won't pretend otherwise. Sessions, reading time, pace, Mood, Rhythm and Margins were never recorded by Goodreads, so there is nothing to import. An imported book keeps its rating and its finish date and shows no sessions. That record starts the first time you press start in RUNU. A Goodreads export has no start date at all, so RUNU never invents one.

What happens if RUNU can't match a book, and will I get duplicates?

A book RUNU can't confidently identify is skipped rather than guessed at, and listed afterwards with the reason and the row it came from, so you can add it yourself. If the import itself failed on a book, you can retry that one book. Duplicates don't stack: a book already in your library converges on the entry you have, and anything you edited yourself is kept over the imported value — including a review you wrote in RUNU.

Do I have to delete my Goodreads account?

No. Importing copies your history into RUNU and changes nothing in Goodreads. Keep both for as long as you like — and if Goodreads is where your friends are, that comparison is here, honestly made.
